A Dream Gift for a Beloved School Janitor
A group of high school sophomores from James Madison High School in Vienna, Virginia, recently made a heartfelt impact on their community by rallying together to surprise their school janitor, Francis Apraku, with a brand-new car. Described by students as “super kind and friendly,” Apraku, a Ghanaian immigrant, has always been a beloved presence at their school, known for his warm interactions and even offering prayers for students.
The idea began as a light-hearted question: the boys asked Apraku what he’d want as a birthday present. Jokingly, he replied that he’d love a new Jeep Wrangler. Inspired by his dream, students Bennett, Nick H., Nick T., Artin, Joey, Yousif, and Logan launched a GoFundMe campaign in May, hoping to raise enough funds by graduation. But with the overwhelming support of their community, they reached their goal by the end of summer, ultimately raising $21,000.
On September 9th, the boys gathered in the school parking lot to reveal Apraku’s candy-apple red Jeep. A video capturing the moment shows Apraku overwhelmed with joy, dropping to his knees and exclaiming, “Oh my God, I can’t believe this.” The students’ generosity and community spirit created a day neither Apraku nor the students will forget. “This day, I will never forget,” Apraku shared, visibly moved.
The students’ kindness not only gave a cherished staff member his dream but also inspired their community to support one another in meaningful ways.
